The last customer had stumbled out an hour ago, but the kitchen still smelled of char and citrus. Mara wiped down her station with sharp, angry strokes, refusing to look across the pass. On the other side, Julian was dismantling his own mise en place with the same deliberate slowness he brought to everything—a taunt in every movement.

“You burned the scallops tonight,” he said, not looking up.

“You over-whipped the ganache,” she shot back. “Your plates looked like someone cried on them.”

He laughed, low and genuine, and that was worse than an insult. Mara hated how much she liked that sound. For three years they’d traded barbs across this line, two head chefs in one kitchen, a restaurant built on their mutual loathing. The investors thought it was chemistry. Mara called it a slow-motion knife fight.

“We’re closed,” she said. “Go home.”

Julian set down his towel. “You first.”

She turned, and he was already there—close enough that she could smell the rosemary on his hands, the wine on his breath. His eyes dropped to her mouth. “Mara.”

“Don’t.”

“I’m not going to pretend I don’t want to.”

She should have shoved him. She should have walked out. Instead she grabbed the front of his chef’s coat and pulled him down, and his mouth met hers like a match striking. It was messy and hot and tasted of salt and the cabernet he’d been sneaking all night. He pressed her back against the stainless steel, cold through her thin shirt, and she gasped into his mouth.

“This doesn’t mean I like you,” she muttered against his jaw.

“Good.” His hands found her hips, lifted her onto the prep counter. “I’d hate to think you’d gone soft.”

She unbuttoned his coat, pushed it off his shoulders. He was lean and warm beneath, and when she scratched her nails down his back he made a sound she wanted to bottle and sell. He tugged her shirt over her head, unhooked her bra with a chef’s efficiency that made her laugh—then stopped laughing when his mouth closed over her nipple.

“Julian—”

“Shut up and let me win for once.”

He knelt between her thighs, dragged her trousers down, and put his mouth where she was already wet. Mara gripped the edge of the counter, head thrown back, the industrial lights humming overhead. He was relentless, thorough, a man who plated to perfection and ate like he cooked. When she came, she bit her own fist to keep quiet, and he watched her the whole time.

Afterward, he kissed her bruised mouth and whispered, “Tomorrow, I’m still going to destroy your special.”

“Try,” she breathed.

They cleaned the kitchen together in silence, shoulder to shoulder, and neither of them left first.
