The Letter in the Lamp Room
-
When the keeper of a remote lighthouse finds a letter in her own handwriting warning her not to light the lamp tonight, she must decide whether to trust herself or the ships counting on her.
-
Setup: Maren Holt has kept the North Rock light alone for six years, since the storm that took her brother. She trusts the lamp, the logbook and nothing else.
Inciting incident: On the first night of winter she finds a letter in the lamp room, in her own handwriting, dated tomorrow: do not light the lamp.
Rising action: More letters arrive, each one dated a day ahead and each one right. A supply boat is late, a radio goes dead, and a stranger is pulled from the water calling himself the new keeper.
Midpoint: Maren learns the stranger was sent because the company believes she is dead. The letters stop.
Crisis: A storm comes in, a ship is on the rocks, and the last letter says the light will lead it to its wreck.
Climax: Maren leaves the lamp dark and rows out with a hand lantern, guiding the ship around the rocks herself.
Resolution: At dawn she writes a letter of her own, dated yesterday, and leaves it in the lamp room for whoever needs it next.
-
The letters were written by Maren after the wreck that killed her brother, a night she has been living again and again, and this is the first time she changes it.

A plot is not a list of events; it is a chain of causes. Every beat should happen because of the one before it, and the ending should pay off something the opening planted. That is why this plot generator writes each beat in order and builds the whole story around one twist.
A good logline helps too: one sentence with the hero, what they want, what stands in the way and what they could lose. If the logline is clear, the plot usually is.
How to use the plot generator
- Start with an idea, or none. A character and a problem is enough. Leave it blank for a story idea out of nowhere.
- Pick the genre and the kind of plot. Thirteen genres and nine classic plots, from the quest to the whodunit.
- Choose a structure. Three acts, the hero's journey, Save the Cat, seven points, kishōtenketsu or the Fichtean curve, under More options.
- Shape it. Set the tone, the format and how original it should be, then rewrite it with a bigger twist or a happier ending.
