What is a headcanon?
A headcanon is something you believe about a character that the story never actually said. Canon is what the author wrote. Headcanon is what you filled in.
It is not a theory. A theory argues that something is already secretly true. A headcanon does not care. It only has to feel right.
What makes a headcanon land
The bad ones are big. The good ones are small. Nobody remembers "she is secretly a princess". Everybody remembers "she folds the receipt into a triangle before she throws it away".
- Go small. A habit beats a backstory.
- Contradict something. The loud one is the worst at goodbyes.
- Make it repeatable. If it can happen twice it is a trait. If it happens once it is a plot.
- Leave the reason out. The gap is where the reader does the work.
Headcanons for your own OC
An original character has no canon to push against, so the tool does the pushing for you. Roll a set, keep the two lines that surprise you, and throw the rest away. Two good ones make a character. Six make a questionnaire.
