A list of events is not a backstory
Most backstory tools give you things that happened. Orphaned at seven. Trained by a master. Betrayed by a friend. All of that is a timeline, and a timeline does nothing on the page.
A backstory works when it explains a behaviour you can see today. Not "their father left", but "they check whether the door is locked twice, and have never once said why".
Why the last line matters most
The sixth thing this tool gives you is the version they tell: what your character says when somebody asks about it.
That gap, between what happened and what they admit to, is where the whole character lives. It gives you dialogue, it gives you a reveal, and it gives the reader something to catch before the character says it.
- The turn should be small. A letter arriving beats a war starting.
- The cost has to still be there. A wound that healed is background, not backstory.
- The secret must be sayable. If nobody could ever find out, nothing can happen.
- The goal points forward. Backstory that does not create a want is set dressing.
Using it for an OC
Pick the life shape, not the personality. The shape is what kind of past it was; who it made them is a separate question, and the personality generator answers that one.
Using it to unstick a story
If a character will not do anything, they usually have no want. Roll a backstory and take only the goal line. A character who wants something specific will move on their own.
