The letter was not from her mother.
Lena turned it over twice, as if the handwriting might change its mind. The envelope had waited in the attic for thirty years, addressed in her mother's name, but the voice inside was a stranger's, careful and a little afraid.
"If you are reading this," it began, "then Clara kept her promise and hid it well. My name is Thomas Wren. I was your mother's friend, and I am the reason she left the city."
Downstairs, the kettle began to scream. Lena did not move.
The letter went on for three pages. It told her about a summer in 1994, a bookshop on Harbour Street, and a debt her mother had paid for someone else. It told her about a box of papers buried under the third apple tree, the one that never bore fruit. It ended with a line that made the attic feel suddenly cold:
"They will come looking for it one day. When they do, do not tell them you found this."
Lena folded the pages back into their envelope. Through the small round window she could see the orchard, grey in the late light, and the third tree standing a little apart from the others, bare as it had always been.
The kettle was still screaming. Somewhere below it, very faintly, someone knocked on the front door.
