The Thief Who Chose the Wrong Castle
-
The window yielded with a whisper of oiled hinges, and Mira slipped through it like a shadow given permission. She'd cased the castle for three weeks—the guards' rotations, the locked doors, the vault beneath the east tower rumored to hold a fortune in old gold. What she hadn't cased was the woman standing at the foot of the stairs, waiting, a wine glass held loosely in one pale hand.
"You're late," the Countess said. "I expected you Tuesday."
Mira's hand went to the knife at her belt. "You knew I was coming."
"I knew something was coming. The castle tells me." The Countess smiled, slow and red. "You're the first thief in forty years. I was beginning to think the legends had finally died."
Mira should have run. Instead she took a step forward, because the Countess was beautiful the way a storm is beautiful—something you watch knowing it could ruin you. "I'm not leaving empty-handed."
"No," the Countess agreed. "You're not." She set the glass on the banister and closed the distance between them, and Mira let her, let cool fingers find the nape of her neck and tilt her head back. "Tell me what you came for."
"Gold."
"Liar." The word was warm against Mira's throat. "You came because the last man who robbed me never came back, and you wanted to know why."
Mira's breath caught. "And why didn't he?"
"He was boring." The Countess's lips brushed her pulse, not biting, just resting there, feeling it race. "I kept him a week and then I let him go. He told everyone I was a monster."
"Are you?"
"I'm a woman who hasn't been surprised in two centuries." The Countess drew back enough to look at her, eyes dark and amused. "Surprise me."
Mira kissed her. It was reckless and stupid and exactly what she wanted, and the Countess made a low sound against her mouth and pulled her in by the hips, and for a long moment there was nothing but the cold stone wall at Mira's back and the cool weight of a body pressed to hers, and teeth—careful, teasing teeth—grazing her lower lip.
"The vault," Mira managed, when she could speak.
"Empty," the Countess said. "Has been for years. I keep it for the hopeful." She kissed the corner of Mira's jaw. "You can rob me of something else."
Mira stayed three days. She left with no gold and no regrets, and the Countess watched from the tower window as she went, already counting the nights until the next thief was foolish enough to climb.
