Keeper of the Light
-
Nora Vance had been on Wreck Island for six days, and the lighthouse keeper had spoken to her exactly four times. Three of those were "No."
"I need the south cove for my seal counts," she tried on day seven.
"No," said Callum Reid, not looking up from the lamp he was polishing.
"That's five," Nora said. "You know you're allowed other words."
He looked up then. Grey eyes, weather-cut face, a scar through one eyebrow that she absolutely did not wonder about. "The south cove floods at high tide. People drown there."
"Oh," said Nora. "That's a very good reason. You could have led with it."
Something twitched at the corner of his mouth. It might have been a smile. It vanished before she could be sure.
After that he left the tide tables on the kitchen table every morning, the dangerous hours circled in red pencil. She started leaving him coffee. He started drinking it. On the eleventh day a storm rolled in, and she found him at the top of the tower at midnight, soaked, fighting a shutter the wind had torn loose.
She held the ladder. He fixed the shutter. When he came down, they were standing very close in the dark, the whole tower humming with rain.
"You shouldn't be up here," he said quietly.
"You shouldn't be up here alone," she said.
He looked at her for a long moment. Then he reached out and pushed a wet strand of hair from her face with a care that made her forget how to breathe.
"Nora," he said. It was the first time he'd used her name.
She kissed him before the storm could change its mind.
In the morning the tide tables were on the table as usual, with one new line in red pencil at the bottom: South cove safe at 2 p.m. I'll show you the seals.
