Best AI Roleplay Prompts: 30 Ideas to Start Tonight
These 30 roleplay prompts are written to paste into a chat with an AI character as your opening message. Each one gives the character a role, gives you one, and puts a problem in the room before anyone says hello. Every character in them is an adult.
Quick answer
A good AI roleplay prompt says who the character is, who you are and what problem is already happening. Paste it as your first message, add one action or line of speech for your own character, then let the AI react. Short prompts beat long setups, because they leave the character room to surprise you.

- The dragon's loan. Forty years ago you lent my village a chest of gold. I'm the new mayor, the chest is empty, and you've just landed in the square.
- The wrong apprentice. Your nephew isn't coming. I am, with his letter, and you're a court wizard who has had a very long week.
- The last ferry. I press a coin into your hand. You row the only ferry to the land of the dead, and you can tell I'm still breathing.
- The borrowed crown. As her guard captain, you've hunted three months for the missing queen. Today you find her face on me, at a turnip stall.
- The map that moves. "This map was blank when you sold it to me." I slap it on your counter. Overnight it drew the whole harbor, your shop included, in flames.
Sci-fi roleplay scenarios
Science fiction works best with one strange thing and everything else ordinary. When you want a fresh premise, our free plot generator gives you one to build on.
- Cargo with a pulse. You captain a small freighter. Three days out, the sealed crate I hired you to carry starts knocking from the inside.
- The night shift. My first night as station supervisor. You, the maintenance android, mention that my predecessor never left, like it's small talk.
- Same day again. Is it Tuesday again for you too? This colony ship wakes to the same day every morning, and I thought only I had noticed.
- One word off. Treaty talks, hour four. You're the alien envoy, I'm the junior translator, and the word I keep translating as friend means something else.
- Tomorrow's message. Nobody on our survey team has heard from Earth in months. Tonight the radio crackles on: your voice, reading a log dated tomorrow.
Slice of life roleplay ideas
Quiet scenes still need a small problem, or the chat drifts into small talk. The roleplay prompt generator makes more around your own characters, genre and setting.
- The wrong couch. Your couch is in my living room. The movers picked the wrong door and drove off, and you, my new neighbor, just knocked.
- First tray, burned. Five in the morning, my first shift at your bakery, and the first tray is already black.
- The last bus. We've ridden the same last bus for months without a word. Tonight it breaks down, and you finally say hello.
- Notes on the fridge. A year of sharing a flat, and we've only ever talked through notes on the fridge. Today we're both home sick.
- Six years later. I duck into a record shop out of the rain, and you're behind the counter. Best friends at university, then six years of nothing.
Mystery RP prompts
A mystery prompt needs one clue in the first message and a character who knows more than they say. Need a culprit with a real motive? Give them a past worth hiding with the free backstory generator.
- The locked greenhouse. The prize orchid is gone from a greenhouse locked from outside. I'm the gardener, I hold the only key, and you're the detective who just pulled up.
- Undelivered. Behind a wall at your post office, you found a sack of letters from 1987. One has my name and current address on it.
- Two alibis. Inspector, I've told you twice: we were together all night. I don't know why the other suspect just changed their story.
- The novelist's draft. Your unfinished manuscript describes last week's crime down to the weather. You're a famous mystery writer, and I'm the new assistant who read it.
- The missing hour. We wake up at the same table in a train station café. Neither of us remembers the last hour, and we have matching keys.
Horror roleplay prompts
Horror in a chat runs on what nobody has seen yet, so keep your own turns short and let the character describe what's wrong. For a darker premise, run the plot generator until one gives you chills.
- The lighthouse rule. Tomorrow you leave me the lighthouse for the winter. Tonight you give me one rule: never answer the knock at three in the morning.
- A third voice. We're podcast hosts spending a night in an empty hotel. Playing back the tape, we hear a third voice asking us to stay.
- Snowed in. Our cabin is snowed in. You came back from the woodshed an hour ago, and you keep calling me by my sister's name.
- The noon bell. I moved to your town for work. Nobody will say who rings the church bell at noon, and you look like you know.
- The other me. Midnight, a knock. You're on my doorstep wearing my face, and you say I'm the one who doesn't belong in this house.
Romance roleplay ideas
Romance prompts work best when there's a reason the two of you can't just say it yet. On Rabu AI, chat characters are written as companions, so flirting comes easily to them. The OTP prompt generator has more setups for a pair, and the romance story generator writes a story to borrow from.
- The fake date. You need a date for your sister's wedding, and I owe you a favor. We have one dinner to agree on how we met.
- Rival bookshops. The power's out on the whole street. Your bookshop has candles and mine doesn't, and we've been rivals since I opened across the road.
- Pen pals. For a year we've written letters under fake names. Today you hand me my coffee, and I know that handwriting on the cup.
- The alliance. Our houses are at war, so they engaged us to end it. First dinner alone tonight, and neither of us asked for this.
- One week home. You were the one who got away. We're both back in our hometown for a week, and your parents just invited me to dinner.
How to turn a prompt into a good first message
A prompt sets the scene, and your first message puts you in it. Add one thing your character does or says, and stop before the other character reacts.
These work in any AI chat app. On Rabu AI, paste one into AI roleplay chat or play a story where a narrator runs the cast. For more on openers, read how to start a roleplay, and if you're new, how to roleplay with AI covers the basics.
- Add one action or line. After "Cargo with a pulse", add: I press my ear to the crate. "Captain, did you hear that?"
- Stop before their reaction. Don't write what the character feels or says. That's their half of the scene.
- Keep it short. Three to six sentences is plenty. A page of backstory buries the hook.
- Make it yours. Change the names, move the setting, flip who knows the secret.
- Regenerate before you rewrite. If the first reply is flat, ask for another version. The prompt was often fine.
