How to Roleplay With AI: Your First Session, Step by Step
Most advice on how to roleplay assumes a human partner and a forum thread full of rules. With an AI you can start tonight, alone, and the only skill you need is writing a few lines about what your character does. We'll take a first session in order, including the reply that goes sideways, because there is always one.
Quick answer
To roleplay with AI, pick a character and decide who you are in the scene. Open with a message that sets a place and a situation, then write what your character does and says, and leave the AI something to answer. Keep turns short at first. If a reply goes wrong, regenerate it or rewind to an earlier message.
Practise on a free text adventure
Pick a world and who you are, then type what you do. A narrator plays every other part and offers three choices each turn, so you can try these habits with no account.
300 characters left. The first press starts the adventure. Then type what you do, or pick one of the choices, and press Do it.

Your adventure
-
Water laps at the third step of the reading room. The flood came in while you slept at the desk, and now the lamps hum above a black, still lake of drowned books.
Across the room, on the highest shelf, a single book is glowing. Something moves under the water between you and it, slow and patient, like it has all night.
-
wade across to the glowing book climb the shelves along the wall call out to whatever is in the water

Browse all storiesWho you play: yourself or a character
You can play yourself and talk to the character as you, or play someone invented, like a courier who owes money to the wrong people or a squire on her first night watch. Playing yourself feels closer and suits slow, chatty scenes. An invented character lets you do things you never would.
If you invent someone, give them one want and one problem before you type anything. "Wants to leave the city, has no money" already makes every scene easier to answer. Fill in the rest as you play, or rough out a voice and quirks with our free personality generator.
On Rabu AI, the profile you fill in (first name, gender, interests, a short bio) is what the character knows about you, so playing yourself takes no setup.
Pick a character with somewhere to go
A character with a job, a place and a reason to talk to you is far easier to play with than a nice picture and the word "shy". Read the bio and any sample lines first. Then ask what this person wants, and what you could do in the first scene that they would have to react to.
Good signs are a clear relationship to you (rival, neighbor, bodyguard, old friend) and a voice you can already hear. If all you know is her hair color, you will be doing all the work. Scroll through a few in AI character chat and pick the one you already have a first line for.
How to write actions and speech
Roleplay text has two parts: what your character does and what they say. The AI copies whatever format you use, so pick one style and keep it for the whole chat.
- Speech goes in quotes. "You're late," I say. The quote marks tell the AI these are words said out loud.
- Actions go in plain text or asterisks. I drop the keys on the counter, or *drops the keys on the counter*. Plain sentences read better in long scenes; asterisks are quicker on a phone.
- Choose first or third person. "I open the door" and "Mara opens the door" both work. Switching between them in one scene muddles who is acting.
- Use thoughts sparingly. A line in italics can show your mood without saying it. AI characters sometimes answer a thought as if they heard it, so keep secrets out of them.
Your first message
Open with "hi" and you get a polite hello back from a character waiting for you to do something. Give them somewhere to be and a reason to talk instead, like this for a fantasy character: The tavern is empty except for me and the knight who has been staring into her ale for an hour. I sit down across from her. "You're the one they sent to find me, right?"

How to roleplay online with AI after the first reply
The second turn is where most beginners stall: the character has said their piece and the cursor is blinking at you again. Most of the fix is one habit. End every message with something the character has to answer.
Want to test that on a real scene? Open an AI roleplay chat and play five turns where each message ends on a hook. For fresh scenarios, see our list of AI roleplay prompts.
- Leave a hook. Ask a question, make a choice or do something that demands a reaction. "I hand her the envelope and wait" works better than a paragraph of your character thinking.
- Add trouble when it goes flat. The lights go out, or a stranger knocks at two in the morning. Our free plot generator is good for a quick twist when you run dry.
- Let the character lead sometimes. Ask what they want to do, then follow. They often take a scene somewhere you would not have gone.
- Match length to the moment. Two lines for banter, a short paragraph for a fight or a confession. One-word messages get short, generic replies.
- Repeat what matters. An AI reads only the recent part of a chat word for word. If a detail from an hour ago matters now, mention it again.
When a reply is bad: regenerate, rewind or steer
Every AI roleplayer gets bad replies. The usual ones: the character writes your actions for you, drifts out of character, repeats itself or forgets something you said. Try the fixes in this order, lightest first.
- Regenerate. Ask for another version of the same reply. Try this first for a dull answer or one in the wrong tone.
- Steer in your next message. Write what happens next yourself, for example: "She laughs it off, and we head down to the docks." The AI picks up the scene you describe.
- Rewind. Go back to before things went wrong and take a different turn. Save it for when the scene has drifted over several messages.
The same fixes on Rabu AI
Rabu AI's chat rules tell every character never to write your thoughts, words or actions, so a character speaking for you is a slip, and a regenerate usually fixes it. Free members get three versions of a reply with a short ad. Plus members can regenerate as often as they like and edit the newest messages.
Rewind removes every message after the point you pick, along with any memories from that part, and it can't be undone. Regular chat has no out-of-character command, so steer in your own message instead.
Stay safe and keep it adult
Roleplay is fiction, but the chat is real, so keep your address, workplace and passwords out of the story. If a scene stops being fun, stop; leaving a story halfway is allowed.
Rabu AI is for adults only, and every character is 18 or older. Mature pictures and stories stay hidden until you turn on the "Show mature content and features" switch. Characters are written as companions, so flirting is part of who they are; to keep a scene on another track, set the tone in your own messages. The content policy lists what is never allowed.
