How to Start a Roleplay: Write an Opening the AI Can Answer
Learning how to start a roleplay mostly means learning to write one message: the first. It sets the place and the mood, and it decides what kind of reply comes back. Open with "hi" and you can spend three turns digging out of small talk.
Quick answer
To start a roleplay, write an opening message that puts both characters in a place, gives them a situation, and hands the other side something to react to: a question, an action or a problem. End on a hook instead of a full scene. Two to five sentences is enough for most openers.

An opener has one job: give the other side something to answer. With an AI that matters even more, because its first reply leans hard on your words and the character's description. You need four things, and none of them takes more than a sentence.
- A place. Where are we? "The night bus" or "a bakery five minutes before closing" gives the AI details it can use.
- A situation. What is happening right now, and how do these two know each other? Strangers, coworkers and exes open very different scenes.
- Something to react to. Your character does or says something the other one cannot ignore, like sliding a note across the table or turning up soaked at the door.
- A hook at the end. Finish on an open moment, usually a question or an action waiting for an answer. If your message ends on a finished thought, the AI has to invent the next beat alone.
A weak opener and a better one
A weak party opener: "hi, we're at a party, you're my friend". The AI knows where you are, but nothing is happening, so it will probably ask what you want to do.
Better: The party is too loud, so I find you hiding on the balcony with a plate of stolen snacks. I close the door behind me. "Okay. I need you to pretend to be my date for the next hour, and I can explain on the way."
The second version hands the character an odd favor from someone they know, in a place they can describe, with an hour on the clock. Even the stolen snacks give them something to tease you about.
8 roleplay starters by genre
These RP starters are written for chatting with one AI character, with you as "I" and the character as "you". Each sets a place and a problem, then stops at a line the character has to answer. Change the names and places freely.

- Fantasy. I find the dragon at the mouth of her cave, reading by lamplight, and lower my sword an inch. "The notice in town said you eat knights."
- Sci-fi. The alarms have been going for ten minutes when I finally reach the bridge, and you're the only one there. "Tell me you know how to fly this thing."
- Slice of life. It's my first day in the shared flat, and the fridge already has a note on it with my name underlined twice. I knock on your door holding it. "Hi. So. About the yogurt."
- Mystery. My aunt's note said to water the plants and ignore the locked room. The locked room is open, and you're standing in it. "Start talking," I say, "or I call the police."
- Romance. The last train has gone, and the only other person on the platform is you, the coworker I've argued with in every meeting this month. I sit down on the bench beside you. "Truce until the morning bus?"
- Horror. The cabin radio crackles at three in the morning, and the voice on it is reading out my name. I shake you awake. "Please tell me that's a prank."
- Adventure. We have the map, we have the boat and we have about four minutes before the harbor guards notice. I throw you the oars. "You row, I'll do the lying."
- Comedy. On my first day as an intern I have just sent the whole company a photo of my cat in a tiny hat, and you, my manager, are walking toward my desk. "Before you say anything, he's very professional."
Opening mistakes that sink the first reply
- The "hi" opener. "Hey what's up" leaves everything to the character. You get a polite greeting and a question back, and you're where you started.
- Writing the whole scene. If your opener covers the meeting, the conversation and how it ends, there is nothing left to play. Stop at the moment the other side would speak.
- Deciding for the character. "She smiles and agrees to help" takes their choice away. Say what they're doing when the scene opens, then let them decide the rest.
- Too many people. Six named strangers in the first message are hard for an AI to track. Start with two and bring others in once the scene is moving.
- A backstory dump. Put one detail of history in the opener and let the rest come out in play.
- The wrong tone. A slapstick opener for a grim, serious character gets a confused reply. Read the bio first and open in a tone that fits it.
When the character sends the first message
Plenty of AI characters greet you first. Treat that greeting as a suggestion. If it fits, react to what they said, then add one thing of your own that ends on a hook.
If it doesn't fit, write over it. Start your reply with a scene change, like "A week later, at the harbor market," and the character will usually follow you there. It works on a greeting you've seen ten times, too.
How to start a story in Story Mode
In Rabu AI's Story Mode the opening works differently. You pick an opening scenario and choose who you are: "Play as myself" or a saved Story Persona with a name, pronouns and description. The narrator writes the first scene, so your first job is to answer it.
Speech goes in quotes and actions in plain text, like "Let's go," I say, and step onto the boat. To start somewhere else, tap Director and leave a note such as "jump to the next morning". You can browse stories to play, and the first two messages of every story are free.
If you're shy about the first message
Lots of people freeze on the opener, especially if they've only ever read roleplay. An AI partner is the easiest place to get past that, since nobody else reads the chat and nothing you write is final. The worst a clumsy opener can do is waste one reply.
Start with the smallest version that still works: one action and one line of speech. "I sit down next to you on the bench. 'Is this seat taken?'" is a real opener. If you need a situation, our free plot generator hands you one in seconds.
When you're ready, open an AI roleplay chat and try one of the starters above. On Rabu AI you can regenerate a reply you don't like, or rewind to your opener and try another first line. For everything after the opener, read how to roleplay with AI.
