How to Continue a Story With AI (Without It Stalling)
Knowing how to continue a story with AI mostly comes down to what you hand back each turn. A story stalls when your last message gives the AI nothing to react to, so it describes the room again or politely waits for you. The fixes below work in any app, and one section covers the Story Mode tools on Rabu AI.
Quick answer
To continue a story with AI, give the scene a goal and something in the way, then end your turn on a hook the character has to answer, like a question or a stranger walking in. Skip time when a scene runs dry, write more dialogue yourself, and recap key facts once the story gets long.

The letter was not from her mother.
Lena turned it over twice, as if the handwriting might change its mind. The envelope had waited in the attic for thirty years, addressed in her mother's name, but the voice inside was a stranger's, careful and a little afraid.
"If you are reading this," it began, "then Clara kept her promise and hid it well. My name is Thomas Wren. I was your mother's friend, and I am the reason she left the city."
Downstairs, the kettle began to scream. Lena did not move.
The letter went on for three pages. It told her about a summer in 1994, a bookshop on Harbour Street, and a debt her mother had paid for someone else. It told her about a box of papers buried under the third apple tree, the one that never bore fruit. It ended with a line that made the attic feel suddenly cold:
"They will come looking for it one day. When they do, do not tell them you found this."
Lena folded the pages back into their envelope. Through the small round window she could see the orchard, grey in the late light, and the third tree standing a little apart from the others, bare as it had always been.
The kettle was still screaming. Somewhere below it, very faintly, someone knocked on the front door.

Browse all storiesGive the scene a goal and a problem
A story moves when somebody wants something and can't have it yet. AI characters lean agreeable. Leave the road clear and they will solve the whole quest in one reply, then sit there waiting for you.
Write the problem into your turn as something that already happened. "The bridge is out" works better than "maybe something goes wrong", because the AI treats what you state as real and builds on it. Stuck for a problem? Our free plot generator hands you a conflict to drop in.
- A deadline. "The ship leaves at dawn and we still don't have the papers."
- A secret. Let the character catch you hiding something, or hint that they're hiding something too.
- A third person. A rival, a guard or a landlord walks in with a goal of their own.
- A cost. The plan works, but it burns a favor you'll need later.
End every turn with a hook
Whatever your last line is, the AI answers that. Close on "I sit down and wait" and you get a character who sits and waits with you. Leave something open, a question or a noise in the hall, and they have to act.
Compare "I follow you into the tavern" with "I follow you into the tavern, then stop dead. 'That man in the corner was at my father's funeral.'" Same scene, but now there's a man to explain.
- Ask a direct question. "Why did you lie to the captain?" can't be shrugged off, and whatever the character admits becomes plot.
- Offer a choice. "Do we tell her or not?" makes the AI pick, and its pick often surprises you.
- Bring someone in. An old friend turns up who was supposed to be dead, or at least abroad.
- Find something. A key in your coat pocket that doesn't fit any lock in the house.
Skip time and change scenes cleanly
Long scenes go stale. When nothing new is happening, cut: open your turn with one line saying how much time passed and where you are now, like "Three days later, at the border crossing."
Add one thing the skip changed, like a healed wound or a letter that came while you were away, and then act inside the new scene right away. Skip that step and the character usually burns the whole reply recapping the missing days.
Regular chat on Rabu AI has no out-of-character command, so the time skip goes straight into your message like this. The same move works in AI roleplay chat with one character or in a story with a full cast.
Get more dialogue and less narration
Walls of description with one line of speech buried in the middle come up on roleplay subreddits constantly. Some of it comes from your own turns: the AI copies the shape of your turns, so three paragraphs of scenery from you get three back.
- Talk first. Open your message with a line of speech, then add a short action.
- Ask questions out loud. A question in quotes pulls an answer in quotes.
- Trim your inner monologue. If you narrate your feelings at length, the character starts doing the same.
- Say it once, plainly. Where the app has an instruction box or note, write "More talking, less description" there instead of repeating it every turn.
- Try another writer. On Rabu AI you pick the writing model in chat, and they have different voices. Comet is the wordy, descriptive one, so it suits slow scenes better than quick banter.
Use Director notes and Choose Your Path in Story Mode
In Rabu AI's Story Mode, a narrator plays the cast while you play your part, and a few buttons exist for moving a plot. Tap Director to send the narrator an out-of-character note, such as "jump to the next morning" or "make the rival show up". A note lasts one turn unless you tick "Keep as permanent instructions for this story", which saves it to Your guidance.
- Director. Good for time skips and for bringing someone new into the scene. Keep it to one instruction per note.
- Your guidance. Rules for the whole story, like "the rival never apologizes" or "keep replies mostly dialogue".
- Choose Your Path. Suggested moves for when you're stuck. Take one as it is or use it as a starting point.
- Continue. The narrator keeps going, which is handy when you want to watch a fight or a chase play out.
- Branch from here. Try the risky choice without losing the path you were on. Not sure which mode fits your plot? AI story mode vs AI chat compares them.
Recap a long story so the AI keeps track
Every AI reads a limited window of recent text. In a long story the early details slide out of that window, and the AI fills the gap with guesses. That's where the sister you never mentioned comes from.
A short recap every so often fixes most of it. Write it in character, inside the story: "Two days since we fled the capital. Your arm still hasn't healed, and we still don't know who sent the assassin." Where everyone is and what's still unsolved is usually enough.
When the AI gets a fact wrong, correct it plainly in your next message and keep going. Story Mode keeps a running summary of long stories, but a recap of the details you care about still helps. Why AI characters forget explains what the AI can and can't hold.
When the AI still won't move
- Regenerate first. Two or three tries at the same reply often go three different ways.
- Rewind to the last good point. Rewind removes every message after the point you pick. There's no undo, so pick the point carefully.
- Make something happen. You can write events in the world, like the lights going out. Leave the character to react.
- Hand over the wheel. Ask the character what they do next, or press Continue and let them keep going.
- Borrow a next scene. Paste your last few paragraphs into our free AI story continuer, take the idea you like and write your turn around it. For a bigger arc, the AI novel generator drafts a longer plot you can steer toward.
