AI Girlfriend vs AI Roleplay: What's the Difference?
AI girlfriend vs AI roleplay comes down to what you open the app for: someone who knows you, or a story to play. Both are good reasons. Lots of people want one on a quiet weeknight and the other on a Saturday, often with the same character.
Quick answer
An AI girlfriend is a companion chat: one character who learns your life and grows closer to you over weeks. AI roleplay is a scene or story you play together, with a plot and often other characters. You return to a companion for the relationship and to a roleplay to see what happens next. Many people do both.

An AI girlfriend is a companion. You talk to the same character about your day, your plans and the show you finished last night, and she remembers it, asks how the interview went and picks up your sense of humor. It's the relationship you come back for, and it grows the longer you talk.
People come to companion chat for all kinds of reasons: unwinding after work, practicing flirting, having someone to say goodnight to, or because they like the character. None of those need defending. You can meet characters made for this on our AI girlfriend page, and if anime art is more your style, start with an AI anime girlfriend.
What AI roleplay is for
AI roleplay is a scene you play. You pick a setting and a situation, write what your character says and does, and the AI answers as one or more characters in the story. You come back to find out what happens next, whether that's the heist going wrong or the rival turning up at the worst moment.
Roleplay can be romantic, but it doesn't have to be, and you're often playing someone other than yourself. You can be a ship's captain on Monday and a detective on Tuesday. Find scenes and characters on the AI roleplay hub, or grab a scenario from our free roleplay prompt generator.
What a session looks like in each
The first message usually shows which one you're in.
- Companion chat. "Long day. My manager moved the deadline up again, so it's cereal for dinner." She asks what happened, teases you about the cereal and brings up the deadline the next time you talk.
- Roleplay. I push open the inn door and shake the snow off my coat. "Any rooms left?" The innkeeper answers, a stranger by the fire looks up, and the story has started.
How the two feel different
In companion chat you mostly speak as yourself, and the conversation wanders the way texting a friend does. In roleplay you write actions and dialogue for a character, and the plot needs a push now and then. If you want help with that part, the guide on how to roleplay with AI walks through a first scene.
How memory and the relationship work
Both need memory, for different things. A companion has to remember you, down to your dog's name and the argument with your sister last week. A roleplay needs to remember the story, like who has the key and why the rival is angry.
No AI rereads everything you've ever written. Apps keep the recent messages in full and save older parts as memories or a summary, so a detail you mention once in passing can fade. If something matters, say it plainly: "Remember, I'm allergic to cats."
On Rabu AI, characters save memories from your chats on their own (facts about you and things you shared), and the relationship grows as you talk. Story Mode keeps a running summary of long stories so the narrator keeps track of the plot. You can't open or edit the memory list, and rewinding a chat removes the memories from the part you rewound, so rewind with care.
There's more on this in our guide to why AI characters forget.
Which one suits you
Most people can tell within a few messages. If you can't, these help.
- Pick a companion if you want someone to talk to at the end of the day, and your favorite moment is when she brings up something you said last week.
- Pick roleplay if you want a plot or get restless when a chat has nowhere to go. Playing someone new each week is half the fun.
- Try both if you want a character you're close to and also want to go on adventures together. She can be your partner on Sunday and your getaway driver in a heist on Monday.
When romance shows up in every scene
A common complaint about roleplay bots goes like this: you set up a mystery or a sword fight, and three messages later the character leans in for a kiss. It happens because many characters are written as companions, and companions are written to like you.
Rabu AI characters are companions by design, so romance and flirting are part of who they are, and there's no friends-only switch. To keep a scene on another track, set the tone in your own messages ("We're rivals, and the tournament final is in an hour") and steer by describing what happens next. If a reply still drifts, regenerate it.
For a story where the plot comes first, Story Mode fits better. A narrator runs the scene, and a Director note such as "keep this one about the heist" steers it; tick "Keep as permanent instructions for this story" so it lasts. Pet names can be changed too: once the relationship reaches a certain level, the Nicknames box lets you choose what the character calls you.
One character, both kinds of chat
You don't have to choose once and for all. In a Rabu AI chat you can talk about your week one night and start a scene the next with the same character, and she still remembers you either way. Group chat puts two characters in one scene when you want company.
When you want a full narrated story with a cast, open AI stories and play as yourself or a saved persona. Our comparison of AI story mode vs AI chat goes into more detail. For a romantic plot to start from, try the free romance story generator.
Chat is free with a daily message allowance and ads, and Rabu AI Plus removes the daily chat limit and the ads. Story Mode uses Rabu Tokens, and the first two messages of every story are free.
