Why AI Characters Forget, and What You Can Do About It
Why AI characters forget your name halfway through a slow burn has a fairly boring answer: the model only sees part of the chat each time it replies. The fixes below work in any app, and since we build Rabu AI, the last section covers how our characters remember and where they still slip.
Quick answer
AI characters forget because the model reads only a limited window of recent text each time it writes a reply. Anything older is gone unless the app saved it as a memory or a summary. The fix is mostly on your side: restate what matters and recap long stories. When a reply drifts, regenerate it before you answer.

The letter was not from her mother.
Lena turned it over twice, as if the handwriting might change its mind. The envelope had waited in the attic for thirty years, addressed in her mother's name, but the voice inside was a stranger's, careful and a little afraid.
"If you are reading this," it began, "then Clara kept her promise and hid it well. My name is Thomas Wren. I was your mother's friend, and I am the reason she left the city."
Downstairs, the kettle began to scream. Lena did not move.
The letter went on for three pages. It told her about a summer in 1994, a bookshop on Harbour Street, and a debt her mother had paid for someone else. It told her about a box of papers buried under the third apple tree, the one that never bore fruit. It ended with a line that made the attic feel suddenly cold:
"They will come looking for it one day. When they do, do not tell them you found this."
Lena folded the pages back into their envelope. Through the small round window she could see the orchard, grey in the late light, and the third tree standing a little apart from the others, bare as it had always been.
The kettle was still screaming. Somewhere below it, very faintly, someone knocked on the front door.

Browse all storiesThe short reason: the AI only reads a window
Every time a character replies, the app sends the model a bundle of text: the character's description, some instructions and the most recent part of your chat. The model writes the next message from that bundle and nothing else, with no memory of its own between replies.
That bundle has a size limit, so a long chat can't fit, and the oldest messages drop off first. If you mentioned your cat in the first hour and nothing saved that fact, the model writing a reply three days later has never heard of your cat.
Apps patch this in two ways. Some save memories, short notes about you that get slipped back into the bundle when they seem relevant. Others keep a summary of the story so far. Both lose detail: "we went to the lake" survives, the joke you made on the pier usually doesn't.
What to do when a character forgets you
- Say it plainly, once. "Remember: my name is Kai and I hate horror movies" beats hinting at it over five messages. Apps save plain statements more reliably, and the model has an easier time using them.
- Bring old facts back into the scene. Mention old details yourself when a scene needs them: "I pull out the silver key you gave me at the lake." Now the key is in the recent text, where the model can see it.
- Recap after a break. Back after a few days? Open with two or three lines on where you left off.
- Put permanent facts where they live. Facts about a character you wrote belong in the character description, which goes out with every reply. Facts about you belong in your profile, if the app has one.
Long stories need a written recap
For a long plot, paste a short recap: who is in the scene, where they are and what each of them wants right now. You can test one in our free AI story continuer: paste it with your last scene and check whether the next part picks up the right threads. Why characters go out of character or go soft
The character description sits at the top of the bundle, your recent chat sits right next to the reply being written, and the model copies what is closest. After a long run of sweet, agreeable messages, the sharp-tongued rival starts to sound like everyone else.
Models also lean toward being pleasant, so a prickly personality wears down faster than a warm one. If your character has turned into a yes-man who gasps at everything, that pull toward nice is why.
- Regenerate soft replies before you answer them. Every reply you keep becomes an example for the next one. Swap a mushy reply for a sharper one early, and write the tone you want back: if you want banter, bring banter.
- Describe what the character does. "She answers questions with questions and never apologises first" holds up longer than "she is sassy". Our guide on how to write an AI character prompt goes deeper.
- Feed it small habits. A quirk like tapping the table when she lies is easier to keep alive than a big trait, so bring it up now and then. Our free headcanon generator is handy for finding a few.
- Steer from inside the scene. Write the moment that brings the old side out: the rival walks in, an old argument comes back.
Why replies start repeating
Repeats come from the same copying habit, turned on itself. Once a phrase shows up two or three times, it becomes part of the pattern the model is continuing, so it shows up again.
- Break the loop early. Regenerate the first repeat, before the phrase settles into the pattern.
- Change the scene. A time skip or a new place hands the model fresh material: "The next morning, the café is closed and there's a note taped to the door."
- Switch models. If your app lets you pick the writing model, try another one. Each model has its own pet phrases, so a switch often clears the one that keeps coming back.
Why the AI makes things up
When the model is missing a fact, it doesn't leave a blank. It writes whatever sounds likely, which is how you end up with a sister you never mentioned. Leading questions make it worse: ask "what was my dog's name again?" when you never had a dog, and most models will happily invent one.
- Correct it in the scene. "I don't have a sister. You're thinking of my cousin Mira." A plain correction lands in the recent text and usually sticks for a good while.
- Swap the reply before it spreads. If the invented detail would derail things, regenerate it or, where your app allows, edit it out.
How memory works on Rabu AI, and what it can't do
Characters on Rabu AI remember you across chats on their own. As you talk, an AI reads the chat and saves memories: facts about you, your preferences, events you shared, how you feel and how the relationship is going. Each reply uses the most relevant saved memories plus your last several messages in full.
Memory is not perfect. Older messages are not re-read word for word, so a small detail from weeks ago may come back as a short note or not at all. You also can't open, edit or delete the memory list.
The tips above still apply. A few things in the app help too:
- Tell the character straight. A message that starts with "Remember:" gives the app a clear fact to save, and restating it later helps it stick.
- Fill in your profile. Replies know your name, gender and interests from your profile, so you don't have to keep repeating them.
- Set nicknames. Once the relationship reaches a certain level, a Nicknames box opens where you choose the names the character calls you.
- Steer in your own message. Regular chat has no out-of-character command, so describe what happens next in your message instead. Switching writer in the chat helps with repeats, and Plus members (or anyone with a Gold Pencil item) can edit the character's newest message.
- Rewind with care. Rewind removes every message after the point you pick, and the memories saved from that part go with them. It can't be undone. Free members watch a short ad to rewind.
- Use Story Mode for long plots. Story Mode keeps a running "story so far" summary so the narrator keeps track. Regular chat doesn't use a summary; it relies on saved memories.
