How to Make an OC That Feels Real
This guide shows how to make an OC from the inside out, starting with what they want and what they keep getting wrong. Looks come last. Along the way you'll see one original character built from a blank page, then how to chat with yours or play as them in a story.
Quick answer
To make an OC, start with a premise (a person plus a problem), then give them a want, a flaw and one contradiction. Write a short backstory that explains how they act today, find their voice in a few sample lines, and design their looks last so the outfit says something about who they are.

Your OC
-
Kestrel Nine
-
Kestrel is the water engineer on a mining station at the edge of charted space, and the only person who knows where every pipe on it goes.
-
A tally of forty-one marks scratched into the inside of her left forearm, one for every leak she has sealed.
-
Kestrel is calm in a crisis and useless at small talk. She trusts machines more than people, and she still names every pump.
-
She knocks twice on a wall before she leaves a room, to hear whether it sounds right.
-
To find out who has been draining the reserve tank one litre a night.

Browse all storiesOC ideas: start with a person and a problem
Plenty of OC ideas stall as a vibe, like "a cool swordswoman with silver hair." You can't write a scene from a vibe. Pair a job or a role with a problem that job creates, and the questions start coming on their own: who hired her, and what happens if she quits?
- A dragon's debt collector. She is very good at her job and has never once asked what the gold is for.
- A retired hero, 34. Her powers faded early, and the city still calls her for interviews about the old days.
- A ship's cook in deep space. The crew trusts him with everything except the one door he keeps locked.
- A palace translator. She softens every insult between two kings and is running out of polite words.
Free tools for a starting point
Our free OC generator rolls a premise when the page is blank, and the character name generator suggests names that fit a setting.
Give them a want, a flaw and a contradiction
A want is what the character is chasing right now: a promotion, a way home, someone's forgiveness. With a want in place, you always know what your OC is doing in a scene.
A flaw is the habit that gets in the way. Pick one that causes trouble for other people too, like pride that won't let her ask for help or a temper he hides until it's too late. Flaws like "clumsy" or "too kind" rarely change what happens in a scene.
Then add one contradiction. A soldier who flinches at fireworks, say, or a con artist who never breaks a promise to a kid. People are inconsistent, and that one odd detail gives a reader (or an AI playing the character) something to poke at.
If personality is the hard part, our personality generator gives you a starting set of traits to argue with.
Write a backstory that explains how they act
Think of backstory as cause and effect. Every big event in the past should leave a habit in the present: the thief who grew up hungry still eats fast, and the knight who was once left behind counts heads before every march.
Keep it short. Three or four events are enough, and at least one should connect to the want or the flaw. Dead parents and a burned village will make a character sad, but they won't tell you how she acts on an ordinary Tuesday.
OC lore grows from there. Add one person they owe and one secret nobody else in the story knows. Our free backstory generator drafts a past you can cut down, and the headcanon generator is good for small everyday details, like what they order at a café.
Find their voice
Voice is how someone could tell your OC apart with the name covered. Decide how long their sentences run and which word they lean on too much.
Then write five or six lines they'd say in ordinary moments, like turning down a favor or apologizing badly. Big speeches all sound alike. An AI leans hard on these small lines when it plays the character, so they're worth the effort.
Try answering a dull question in their voice, such as what they had for breakfast. If anyone could have said it, push the flaw or the contradiction in.
Design their looks last
Leave the design until now, when you know who you're dressing. A character who hides her feelings might wear a high collar. One who wants to be noticed gets a single loud item, like a red scarf over a gray uniform.
Pick two or three details someone would remember after one glance and skip the full inventory. If you draw, sketch the silhouette first, since a shape people recognize does more work than eye color.
Worked example: building Ines Varga step by step
Here is one OC built with the steps above. Ines Varga is 27.
- Premise. A mapmaker in a port city whose streets shift a little every night. Her maps are the only ones that stay right for a whole week.
- Want. To finish a complete map of the city, sell it to the mapmakers' guild and leave for good.
- Flaw. She tells small lies about herself without thinking, mostly to avoid being pitied. It keeps away the people who would help her.
- Contradiction. She checks every line three times and can't stand a wrong street name, yet almost nothing she says about her own past is true.
- Backstory. Her mother, also a mapmaker, vanished on a survey, and the guild blamed a bad map. That's why Ines checks everything three times and won't talk about family.
- Voice. Short, exact sentences and dry jokes. A sample line: "Left at the fish market. No, your other left. The market moved." She corrects directions even in the middle of an argument.
- Looks. Ink on both hands, a coat with too many pockets and a brass compass earring she never explains. It was her mother's.
Bring your OC to life with AI
You find out fast whether an OC works once you talk to them. On Rabu AI you can build them in the free Character Creator and talk to them through AI character chat. The fields line up with the steps on this page.
- About. Name, personality type, occupation, hobbies, interests, age (18 and up) and a bio. Put the want, the flaw and the short backstory in the bio.
- Advanced. Speech style and tone, six sample lines under "Things she'd actually say", behaviour anchors and things the character never does. For Ines, an anchor could read: WHEN {user} asks about her family, she changes the subject to directions.
- Looks. Type, body, hair, eyes, ears, outfit, expression and background. Your two or three memorable details go here.
Test, rewrite, then play as them
A new character starts private. You can chat with it straight away and keep editing it before you submit it for review. If a reply ever writes your actions for you, regenerate it, since the chat rules already tell characters to leave your side of the scene to you. Our guide on how to write an AI character prompt goes deeper on definitions that hold.
Would you rather be the OC yourself? In Rabu AI's Story Mode you can save them as a Story Persona with a name, pronouns, a description and a picture, then play AI stories as them while a narrator runs the world.
