Roleplay Rules and Etiquette for AI Roleplay
The old roleplay rules were written for two people sharing a story, and most of them still hold when your partner is an AI. Some change shape, since an AI lets you break them without a word of complaint. And a couple flip around: now the AI is usually the one breaking them.
Quick answer
The core roleplay rules are short: control only your own character, don't make them unbeatable, match the other side's effort, stay in character and respect the space's limits. They still apply when your partner is an AI. You keep your side of them, and when the AI breaks its side, you regenerate the reply or rewind.

Character A and Character B are the only two passengers left awake on a night train that has not stopped at a station in six hours. The conductor's cabin is locked from the inside, and someone keeps knocking on it.
-
Character A is a courier who has never once opened a package. Tonight Character B offers a fortune to find out what is inside this one, and the package has started to hum.
-
Character B wakes up in Character A's spare room with no memory of the last three days and a map drawn on the back of their hand in Character A's handwriting.
-
Character A and Character B are rival treasure hunters who reach the same sealed tomb at the same moment. The door only opens for two.
-
A storm strands Character A at Character B's remote weather station. By morning the radio is picking up a voice that sounds exactly like Character A.

Rules pages on forums, Carrd sites and game servers all land on roughly the same list. Each rule was there so the other player kept enjoying the scene. An AI doesn't care either way, so now the rules decide whether you get the story you came for.
- No godmodding. Your character can lose, get hurt or be wrong. An AI will let you win every fight and crack every mystery in one move, and the scene goes flat the moment it does. Give your character a weakness the story can use.
- No powerplaying. Don't write the other character's words, feelings or choices. With an AI this rule runs both ways: it shouldn't write yours either, and our guide to writing an AI character prompt covers how to stop that.
- Match length and effort. A model mirrors you. Send one line and you get thin replies, or the AI pads the gap by acting for your character. Send an action plus a line of speech and the reply has something to build on.
- Stay in character. Your character's habits and voice are the AI's main cue for the tone of the scene. If your grumpy knight turns chatty for no reason, expect the whole scene to soften with him.
- Keep side talk clearly separate. Human groups put out-of-character notes in brackets. Some AI chats treat brackets as part of the story, so a plain line about what happens next usually steers better than a side note.
- Respect the limits. Every roleplay space has content rules, and AI apps have them too. Read them before you start a scene that pushes at the edges, because running into one halfway through stalls everything.
Roleplay etiquette the AI can't enforce for you
A human partner would complain if you ignored their last post or rewrote the scene every turn. An AI mostly won't, so this part of roleplay etiquette is on you. Skip it and the replies slowly get vaguer, and nothing tells you why.
- React to what just happened. If the character handed you a letter, do something with the letter. Skipping past details teaches the AI that its details don't matter.
- Leave a move open. "I wait to see what she does" gives the AI nothing to work with. "I slide the letter back across the table, unopened" gives it a choice to make.
- Keep names and facts alive. Models lose details in long scenes. Restating a fact in passing ("You said the bridge was out") keeps it in play, and why AI characters forget explains what a model can hold at once.
- Don't rewrite the scene every turn. If you change the setting, the goal and the mood in one message, the AI starts over each time. Change one thing and let the character catch up.
When the AI breaks the rules
AI partners godmod and powerplay too. The character decides how you feel, wraps up the mystery in one reply, or turns your hardened mercenary into someone who giggles. Arguing with it inside the scene rarely helps, because the bad reply is still sitting in what the model reads next.
Get rid of the bad reply instead. Regenerate it, rewind to before it went wrong, or edit it out if your app lets you. Then write your next message so the move you want is the easy one for the character to make.
On Rabu AI, the chat rules already tell every character never to write your thoughts, words or actions, and group chats and the Story Mode narrator follow the same rule. When a reply slips anyway, generate another response or rewind. A rewind removes everything after the point you pick, memories from that part included, and it can't be undone.
Why does every chat turn into romance?
It's one of the most posted complaints in AI roleplay: you set up a heist, and three replies later someone is blushing. Romance runs through a big share of the roleplay writing these models have seen, so they drift toward it whenever the scene goes quiet. Companion apps lean further that way, because that's what their characters are built for.
Rabu AI is one of those apps, and we'd rather say so up front. Its characters are written as companions, so flirting and romance are part of who they are, and there is no friends-only switch. If you want a scene about something else, you have to steer it.
- Set the tone in your first message. Open with the job, the danger or the joke. "The vault alarm goes off two minutes early" starts a different scene than "You look nervous tonight."
- Keep the pressure on. Romance creeps in when nothing else is going on. A deadline, a rival or a problem to solve gives the character something else to care about.
- Don't reward the drift. If a reply turns sappy and you play along, the next one goes further. Regenerate it and keep your own message on the plot.
- Use a story when you want a plot. In Rabu AI stories, a narrator runs the cast and takes Director notes like "keep this a rivalry, no romance". Tick "Keep as permanent instructions for this story" and the note stays for every turn.
What you can't do in a roleplay
Some limits don't move just because it's fiction. On an AI app they come from the content policy, and the character won't play past them however you frame the scene. If a scene keeps getting refused, read the policy before you rephrase.
On Rabu AI every character is an adult, and adult pictures and adult stories stay hidden until you turn on "Show mature content and features". Theme filters can hide some themes on top of that. The content policy lists what is never allowed.
How to write a good roleplay turn
A solid turn has an action, a line of speech and something for the other side to answer. Two to five sentences is plenty for most chat roleplay. Full sentences and one concrete detail get better replies than shorthand.
Here is one: Ren drops the map on the table and taps the red circle. "We go in at dawn. Unless you've got a better idea?" That gives the AI a plan it can poke holes in and someone to argue with.
