What Is Perchance AI Roleplay?

Perchance is a free site where anyone can build and share generators, run by one developer and paid for by ads. "Perchance AI roleplay" usually means one of three things on perchance.org: AI Character Chat, the simpler AI Chat & Roleplay page, or one of the hundreds of community forks built on the same text plugin.^[8][9]

AI Character Chat is the one serious roleplayers use. You write a character's instructions, a reminder note, example dialogue and an opening message, then play in threads. Several characters can share a thread, and a narrator can step in.^[5][7]

Two community pages come up a lot. Multi-Character AI Chat runs up to four named characters with stat bars, and URV AI adds a lorebook, auto-memory, image generation and an option to paste your own API key for a different model.^[10][11]

What Perchance actually does (checked October 2026)

Several pages that rank for Perchance searches say it has no memory, no saving and no export. That is wrong. Here is what we found in Perchance's own pages and public source code on October 28, 2026.

Why Roleplayers Are Leaving Perchance

Perchance's subreddit and its official Lemmy community are full of people who love the site and still complain about the same few things. For long roleplays, these are the ones that matter.

1. Memories do not travel between threads. Perchance's long-term memory is per thread, and it is off until you turn it on. Start a new scene in a new thread and your character meets you for the first time again.^[6][5]

2. The AI speaks for your character. It is common enough that Perchance's own docs give the fix: a strict reply-length limit and example dialogue. Users still trade tips for it every week, along with complaints about replies that run far too long.^[7]

3. Repetition you start to recognize. Running jokes about "the smell of ozone" and knuckles whitening have their own threads, and a September 2026 post says almost every reply now follows the same template. The developer has said the newer model can repeat itself and fixate on topics.^[20][12]

4. The model changes without notice. The 2025 switch drew complaints about a formal, aggressive tone. Users noticed another change around June 24 to 26, 2026, and one wrote that nobody asked for it. Some people prefer the newer model, but a long roleplay built on one voice can break overnight.^[13][14]

5. One browser holds everything. A user lost a five-hour roleplay that never saved, and a commenter in the same thread says they lost about a year and a half of stories. Perchance's own pages warn that browsers can delete data without asking.^[19][5]

6. Group roleplay is clunky. You can add characters to a thread, but people still ask for a "proper" group-chat option and go looking for other sites to get one.^[23]

7. Outages and silence. Text generation went down after a server move in May 2026, and a site-wide block page on September 28, 2026 made users think they had been banned. Users have asked for a simple status log so they know whether a change was on purpose.^[25][26][15]

8. Mixed reports that it feels tamer. Most threads still describe Perchance as unfiltered, but a few late-2026 comments ask whether the model is quietly censored now.^[16]

What to Look For in a Perchance AI Roleplay Alternative

A one-night roleplay works almost anywhere. A roleplay you return to for months needs more than a good first reply. These are the things that keep a long story together:

• Memory between sessions. Does the character remember last week's scene when you open a new chat, or only inside one thread?

Bringing your roleplay over

There is no one-click move, and we would rather say so up front. Perchance's export file uses its own format, and Rabu AI cannot read it. The character itself moves over in about five minutes.

1. Back up first. In AI Character Chat, export the thread or everything, so your Perchance roleplay is safe whatever you decide.^[7]
2. Copy the character. Open the character's edit screen and copy the name, instructions, reminder note, example dialogue and opening message.
3. Paste it into the Character Creator. The Rabu AI Character Creator is free and offers extensive customization, including male, humanoid and trans characters.^[1]
4. Import a card if you have one. If your character came from a chub.ai card, paste that same link into our importer, or upload the V2 or V3 card file. Character.AI links work too.
5. Fold the lore in. We do not have lorebooks. Put the five to ten facts that matter most into the character's description, or build the whole world as a story, where the story builder keeps your world's rules and secrets in a private brief for the narrator.

NSFW Roleplay and Filters

Perchance's chat pages describe themselves as having no filter, and the plugin notes say the model can produce adult content when prompted. There is no age check on the official pages, and restrictions come from what you write in the character description.^[9][8]

The alternatives split cleanly. Rabu AI, SpicyChat, DreamGen and Chub AI allow adult roleplay for users 18 and over, and Janitor AI allows it on the web while its apps start in Safe Mode.
