The best AI chats for roleplay changed a lot this October. Character.AI filed for Chapter 11, Chai and PolyBuzz disappeared from Apple's App Store, Kindroid ended its free plan, and Talkie tightened its filter. Most lists that rank for this search still describe the apps as they were in the summer.^{[24][34][38][20]}

Roleplayers want different things from a chatbot than people looking for a quick answer. These are the points that every serious list and every Reddit thread keeps coming back to:

• Memory. The character remembers what happened yesterday, not only the last ten messages.
• Staying in character. No sudden assistant voice, no bots that all sound like the same brain.
• Filters that make sense. Clear adult rules if the app allows them, and no "please change your topic" on a sword fight.
• A price you can plan around. Coins, pieces and gems make costs hard to predict.
• Ads and queues. Free tiers that interrupt every few messages break the scene.

What Changed in AI Roleplay This Fall

• Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026. It is selling the company in a court-supervised sale and says the platform will be wound down if no workable bid comes in. The app is running and billing is unchanged for now.^[24]
• Chai left the Apple App Store around October 22. Chai's own subreddit post says the app is temporarily unavailable to download; installed copies still work. Free chat now runs on "pieces", and new Ruby and Diamond plans are replacing the old ones.^[34][35]
• PolyBuzz vanished from the App Store in mid-October in the US and several other countries, with no explanation. Android and the website still work.^[38]
• Kindroid ended its free Lite plan on October 1. New users get a one-time 50-message preview, then the account becomes read-only.^[20]
• Talkie got stricter. Its Terms now set the minimum age at 14 (16 in some countries), and reviewers say the "please change your topic" filter fires more often.^[28][30]
• Free chat is turning into currencies. Chai has pieces, PolyBuzz has opals and Character.AI sells charms, and users are not happy about any of them.^[35][39][25]

Store ratings and age rules do not always agree with each other, so check both before you sign up a younger player or yourself.

NSFW Roleplay: Which Apps Allow It, and "Please Change Your Topic"

If adult roleplay matters to you, the list splits cleanly. Rabu AI, SpicyChat, DreamGen, Kindroid and Nomi allow it for adults. Janitor AI allows it on the web, and its apps hide it until you opt in. AI Dungeon has a mature setting. Character.AI, Talkie and PolyBuzz do not allow it, and Replika restricts it.^{[3][14][6][25]}

The bigger complaint in 2026 is false alarms. Talkie reviewers hit "please change your topic" on harmless actions, and even adult platforms have tightened their rules: SpicyChat now runs video-selfie age checks, and Janitor users report blocks on anything that might suggest a minor.^[30][12]
