What Is Perchance AI Chat?

Perchance is a site for making and sharing random generators, run by one developer and paid for with ads. Its AI chat pages are built on a shared text plugin that anyone can import, which is why perchance.org is full of chat pages: the official ones, and hundreds of community forks.^[7][10]

When people search "perchance ai chat", they usually mean one of three pages:

• AI Character Chat. The full app: characters with a personality, a reminder note, example dialogue and an avatar, group chats, lore, memories and pictures in chat.^[5][6]
• AI Chat & Roleplay. A simpler official chat page. It keeps its log in your browser and uses summaries to stretch memory.^[8]

AI Character Chat is the one most people mean, and it is deeper than it looks. You can write a character's instructions, a reminder note that stays near the end of the conversation, example dialogue and opening messages. You can add several characters to one thread, reply as a character yourself, post narrator messages, and set a hard limit on reply length so the AI stops writing essays.^[6]

It also has tools most competitors never mention. Older messages are summarized automatically, and an optional long-term memory turns your chat into searchable memories you can edit. What Perchance actually does (checked October 2026)

Several unrelated sites use the Perchance name, such as "PerchanceAI" image sites and perchancestory.com. They are not perchance.org. If a "Perchance" site asks you to pay or sign up, you are probably not on Perchance.^[22]

Why Users Are Leaving Perchance AI Chat

Most people who leave Perchance do not hate it. They lost something, or the AI changed under them. Here is what comes up most on r/perchance and the official Lemmy community over the last year:

1. Chats that vanish. One user lost a five-hour roleplay that did not save. Another says about a year and a half of stories disappeared, and now they export every weekend. Perchance warns about this on its own page: the browser can clear its storage without asking.^[15][5]

2. Backups that break. In March 2026, a user found that lore data had made a single chat export about 150 MB, big enough to crash Chrome. A backup you cannot open is not much of a backup.^[12]

3. Repetition. The running jokes write themselves: the smell of ozone, knuckles whitening, dust motes in the light. A September 2026 post says nearly every reply now follows one template. The developer has said the newer model repeats itself and fixates on topics.^[16][10]

4. The AI changes without warning. Perchance switched models in 2025 and again around June 24 to 26, 2026. Users complained that nobody asked for the change and that the new model fights their instructions. Some prefer it, but nobody got a choice.^[13]

5. Short memory. Long-term memory is off by default, and memories do not carry from one chat thread to the next. Users keep asking the developer about the context size, which is not published.^[6][10]

6. Outages and silence. Perchance has had a Cloudflare outage, 521 errors, a server move, and on September 28, 2026 a site-wide block page that users first took for a personal ban. Users ask for a simple status log; the frustration is less the bugs than not knowing what happened.^[17][14]

7. Ads that weigh on the browser. In February 2026, users noticed that new bottom-of-page ads were flagged by Chrome for using too many resources. On a long chat in a phone browser, that adds up.^[23]

8. Odd glitches. For about a day in early January 2026, replies slipped into Chinese, Russian, Korean or Arabic after a fix went wrong. It was fixed, but it shows how one change on the server reaches every chat at once.^[24]

9. No app, and a cramped phone screen. There is no official Perchance app. The official pages work in a mobile browser, but some feature-heavy community chat pages hide buttons on phones because the screen gets too crowded.

The other side is just as real. Users rate it highly as a free AI site, praise the lack of refusals, and many turn off their ad blockers to support the developer. When Reddit asks what replaces Perchance, a common answer is "nothing that is free, unlimited and this open".^[18][19]

NSFW and Filters

Perchance's chat pages say "no filter", and the AI plugin notes say the model can produce adult content when prompted. There is no age check on the official chat pages. A few late-2026 comments say the newer model feels tamer, but most threads still describe it as open.^[5][7]

The alternatives split cleanly. Rabu AI, SpicyChat, Nomi and Kindroid allow adult roleplay for adults, and Janitor AI allows it on the web while its apps hide it until you opt in. Character.AI and Talkie do not allow it. SillyTavern has no filter of its own, so your AI provider's rules decide.^{[3][34][27][30]}

One thing Perchance users notice fast: "no filter" and "no rules" are not the same. Perchance's openness comes with no age check and no written policy, which is part of why some users worry about what happens in public chat rooms and shared characters. How We Tested

On October 28, 2026, we read the public source code of Perchance's AI Character Chat, AI Chat & Roleplay and its AI plugin, and checked them against our first research round from October 4. We re-checked every other app on its own pricing pages, help center, Terms and store listings. User sentiment comes from r/perchance, the official Perchance community on Lemmy, Trustpilot and store reviews; we paraphrase it and link the main sources. We did not sign up for paid plans, and Rabu AI wrote this page.

Our Verdict

Perchance AI chat is a gift: free, open and run by one person who pays for the servers. Its weak spot is not the AI. It is that everything you build lives in one browser, and one cleared cache can end a story you spent months on.

Pick Rabu AI if you want anime companions who remember you, with chats saved to your account on every device. Pick Janitor AI if free and unlimited comes first, Nomi or Kindroid for memory, and SillyTavern if you want Perchance's freedom with your own model.

Who should stay on Perchance

• You never want an account. Nothing else on this list lets you chat for free forever without signing up.
• You love to tinker. Custom code, lorebooks and forks are Perchance's playground.
• You want everything on your own device. Then keep using it, and export a backup every week.

If you stay, protect your chats. Export your data on a schedule, not only when something looks wrong, and keep the file somewhere outside the browser, like a cloud folder.

Do not clear site data for perchance.org, and remember that private or incognito windows forget everything when you close them. On a phone, a browser that runs low on storage can clean up old site data on its own.^[5][15]

If your exports have grown huge, that is usually lore data. Users in March 2026 found that lore made one export about 150 MB, so trimming old lore entries before you export can keep the file small enough to open.^[12]
