What Is the QuillBot AI Story Generator?
QuillBot is best known as a paraphraser and grammar checker for students. Its story generator is a side tool: you enter a prompt, add context and regenerate, then copy the story out. The page says it is free with no sign-up, and its FAQ says it can help with chapter-by-chapter writing.[4]
There is no continue button and no saved story memory, so "chapter by chapter" means pasting context back in yourself. QuillBot also has a separate story prompt generator that only writes prompts, and new genre pages for romance, short stories, horror and plots.[4][5]
Those genre pages disagree with the main one. The romance and short story pages say they are completely free with no cap, while the main story page says it is "free to try, with Premium options".[6][7][4]

The yearly plan is where the surprise charges come from: $8.33 a month is billed as about $99 up front. QuillBot's Premium page also notes that usage limits "may vary by surface".[8] Last verified: October 2026.
Why Users Want a QuillBot Alternative
1. New free limits and forced logins. At least six one-star Trustpilot reviews from October 7 to 26, 2026 complain about new limits and the 100-word paraphrase cap. One reviewer made an account for a free tool and was told they were out of credits before their first prompt.[9]
2. $99 renewals that are not refunded. Reviewers repeatedly warn new subscribers to switch off auto-renew straight away. An App Store reviewer read "$8 a month" and was billed about $99 for the year.[9][10]
3. A one-shot, text-only story. Roundups describe it as a quick draft with no continuation, and a September 2026 review adds that it draws no pictures and invents generic characters.[12][13]
4. Lost work. Recent reviewers report errors, lag, and a glitch that deleted half a draft with no undo.[9]
5. Built for school, not fiction. The story page talks about brand stories and class writing. There are no characters to keep, no pictures, and no way to play the story.[4]
To be fair, the anger is about limits and billing, not quality. Students still praise the paraphraser, citations and grammar help, and QuillBot's star ratings have not moved yet.[9][11]
