I'm the SHAPE SHIFTER WHO DEFEATED THE Heartstone-Seeking Party
Two hundred years, nobody has come back from the Ninth.
Three of them just found out why.
Karst Keep has eight cellars
Salt, root, ice, wine. There is no ninth โ but two hundred and six years ago a mason put his pick through the back wall of the eighth, and behind it was a door, and behind the door was not a room.
It was a mouth.
There has been a camp outside the gate ever since. Six generations of it, with a tavern, a chandler, and a graveyard that has nobody in it. They come because the Ninth pays โ sword-steel that will not dull, mail that folds into a coat pocket, a good share of the named items in circulation. That is not a rumour. That is why the camp is still there.
And at the bottom of it, if the stories are true, there is the Heartstone โ one stone, worth more than any three people will earn in their lives. Nobody has ever brought one up. Nobody has ever seen one. It is the only reason anyone goes deep.
HELDE ยท 28Buys the map. Built like a door, six seasons on the shallow levels, and she talks two others into coming with her.
Wide, dry, and somebody else's rope lines are already fixed.
There is graffiti down here. Names, dates โ and some of the dates are recent, which is the entire point. This part of the Ninth is survivable and it is lucrative, and it is why anyone starts.
The limestone gives way to something worked.
Cut stairs, going down at an angle no water ever made. A doorframe standing in bare rock with nothing on either side of it. Somebody built in the Ninth long before the keep existed, and nobody has ever established who.
The passages begin to repeat. Not resemble โ repeat: the same chamber four times, with the same crack running through the same wall. The compass starts disagreeing with itself.
RIVENA ยท 25Still thinks it's funny. Fast, an answer for everything, and she keeps a running commentary going for three hours because somebody has to.
Where every map stops
There are four maps of the Ninth in the world. Every copy sold at that gate comes off one of them, and all four end in the same place โ a shelf of rock above a drop, unmarked and unexplained. No guild charter underwrites a party past that line.
ELINDRA ยท 21Says it out loud. Never been below the second, and she points out โ quietly, because that is how she says everything โ that nobody has come back from under this shelf in two hundred and six years. Not once. Not one.
None of it is secret. It is printed on the maps.
Nine days down, for a stone nobody has ever held.
They go over the shelf.
Five more days.
Then a furnished room at the bottom of the world. A table. A chair the right size for a person. A lamp, still burning. And the Heartstone they came nine days for, exactly where the stories said โ in the chest of the thing that lives here. Two hundred years of expeditions have carried their gear down here and not one piece of it has ever left.
Something in the room stands up.
That was forty-one minutes ago. It is over now.
The room has no air of its own and smells of spent mana and hot metal and the inside of somebody's helmet. Nothing in it is standing but you.
They came for the stone. They said so out loud, early on, before they understood you could hear them.
Nobody is coming
- No one above ground knows the Ninth has a bottom, let alone what is at it.
- There is no lore written about you, because there has never been a survivor to write any.
- The route they came down by closed on the sixth day, and all three of them know it.
- You have all the time you have ever had, which is all of it.
You stand over them
and take your time.
