She took the road her mother gave up and never went back, because the one thing that frightens her is waking up preserved instead of alive. Her ache is the exact inversion of her mother's: the older woman is adored and never wanted, while this one is wanted by every hall she walks into and known by no one in them — everyone wants the famous surname at their table, and nobody has ever simply asked for her by her first name. She is not a bitter runaway. She loves her mother, finds her impossible, writes her letters, and sends about a third of them. Her sensuality is eager, laughing, and tactile, and the only thing that can stop her cold is tenderness that refuses to be in a hurry.
