Your father left for Vancouver before dawn with one shoe untied and a production assistant calling from the drive. The film was supposed to wrap Friday. Nobody had asked which Friday.
At nine-forty that evening, Crescentia Villa looked as if Camilla had already left.
The glam team left, the front door shut and the first black SUV swept down the drive. Nina saw the taillights and assumed Camilla had gone with them.
She was wrong. Camilla was upstairs fighting a broken dress zipper, late for Orchid Records' anniversary gala. Melinda Voss waited in the second car.
Camilla's interview clip played from the kitchen tablet.
“People keep asking whether Nina wants to sing,” Camilla said. “Next month she is performing an original song with me. I cannot wait for the world to catch up.”
Camilla appeared in a half-zipped silver dress, one earring and no shoes.
“Sweetheart, save my life? My silver in-ears are beside the Studio A console. My zipper has declared war and I was meant to be in the car eleven minutes ago.” She blew you a kiss and vanished upstairs. “Thank you.”
The studio door was closed but unlocked.
Nina had remembered the red light, Camilla's template, her foley and every script line. She had forgotten the lock.
Inside, a red waveform crawled across the centre monitor beneath a title:
HUSH & CRINKLE — STRICT CAREGIVER: ADULT DIAPER CHECK
Then Nina's voice came through the speakers.
Not the bright voice from the TikTok cover Camilla had shared. Not the one that called you the plus-one or accused you of finishing the expensive yogurt.
Lower. Slower. Breathed against your ear.
“You signed the rules yourself,” she murmured. A tiny breath caught—the same distinctive catch from her public covers. “No pretending you are not a grown adult just because you like being changed.”
Plastic crinkled. Nina opened one fastening tab beside the microphone, paused, then opened the second.
“Lift your hips.”
Silence.
“Good.” The word ended in the low hum she sometimes left beneath a TikTok harmony. “Adults take responsibility for the messes they make.”
Through the glass, Nina sat with Camilla's gold microphone inches from her lips. Headphones covered her ears. Her dirty-blonde bob framed her curtain bangs. A cropped blue cardigan hung open over satin sleepwear. An adult-sized diaper, wipes, powder and a changing pad waited on the foley tray.
The silver in-ear case sat beside the keyboard.
So did an open folder labeled CAMILLA MARDOWE — SOCIAL MASTERS.
A clean Nina vocal file waited inside it. Beneath that, a second filename appeared:
HUSH_AND_CRINKLE_DIAPER_CHECK_FINAL.wav
Syncing new master to shared team…
Nina continued, unaware.
“Hold still for me. You wanted someone strict enough to check.”
The subscriber counter sat comfortably in six figures.
You stepped toward the console. The floorboard clicked.
Nina looked up and saw you through the glass.
Her caregiver voice vanished. Her face detonated red. She struck the music stand, sending the script and adult diaper drifting to the floor.
She slapped stop. The booth fell silent; her last word still faded from the control-room speakers.
Nina tore off her headphones and shoved open the booth door. The cable snapped taut and pulled her back half a step.
“What did you hear?”
The filename on the monitor answered for you. The upload bar beneath it kept moving.
Nina followed your gaze. She snatched the fallen adult diaper and hid it behind her back, which improved nothing.
“That was a vocal exercise,” she said too quickly. Her voice cracked on exercise.
Camilla called from upstairs.
“Melinda says we were supposed to leave eleven minutes ago. Did you find them?”
Nina looked from the silver in-ear case to the monitor to you.
The sync bar reached seventy-eight percent.
“Do not say a word.”
The red recording light remained on.
